FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS FREEMASONRY

Freemasonry is often described as "a peculiar system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols." In simple terms, this means it's a unique way of helping men become better human beings, using storytelling and meaningful symbols to teach important life lessons.

The ceremonies in Freemasonry are written in old English, but don't let the words of time immemorial throw you off. Think of them as just the tip of the iceberg. What you see or hear during these ceremonies opens the door to deeper teachings that you can apply in all areas of life, whether it's with your family, at work, or in social settings.

WILL I BECOME RICH, GET A JOB OR GAIN BUSINESS

No, Freemasonry is not a platform for gaining wealth or making business connections. While you may naturally form friendships and network with other members, the primary purpose of Freemasonry is personal growth, moral development, and community service.

The Craft aims to foster universal brotherhood, ethical understanding, and shared moral values. It is not a business networking group or a pathway to financial success.

Joining Freemasonry for material gain goes against the core principles of the Craft.

HOW DO I BECOME A MASON

After deciding to become a Freemason and meeting the membership criteria, you'll submit an enquiry. You'll be connected with a District Inspector who introduces you to suitable lodges. If both you and a lodge agree it's a good fit, you'll complete an application and undergo a police check. Following a successful interview with the District Inspector and Lodge Membership Committee, the lodge members will vote on your application. If accepted, you'll be initiated and your lifelong Freemasonry journey will begin.

WHAT ABOUT RELIGION & BELIEF IN A SUPREME BEING?

Freemasonry requires a belief in a Supreme Being for membership but is not a religion or a substitute for one. This non-denominational requirement welcomes men from all religious backgrounds, even those without a specific religious affiliation. Freemasonry aims to unite men through universal brotherhood and shared values rather than endorsing any particular religious doctrine. The belief in a Supreme Being provides a shared moral framework among members while allowing for individual interpretation.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO BECOME A MASON

Freemasonry is a life long commitment. Once you become a Mason, you will always be one, so its best not to rush the process. Typically it can take 3-6 months to go through the process to get to the point of being Initiated. It can take longer depending on your availability and whether you find a lodge that is a mutual fit.

CAN ATHEIST'S BECOME MASONS?

Unfortunately, if you identify as an atheist, you would not meet this particular requirement for Freemasonry. The belief in a Supreme Being is a foundational element that enables the teachings and moral obligations of Freemasonry to resonate with its members.

HOW QUICKLY CAN I BECOME THE WORSHIPFUL MASTER

To become the Worshipful Master of your Lodge it is a process that takes you on a journey of leadership development. Each Lodge will install a their Master each year. It takes approximately 12-18 months to go from Apprentice, Fellow Craft and to Master Mason. Then depending on merit, it can be at least 12 months before you start progressive office in your lodge.

Once you have started progressive office, the journey to the Master's Chair can take a minimum of 5 years. However, as the Master of each Lodge is an elected position, it is not guaranteed you will become Master. You also need to ensure you have met the pre-requisites to be eligible for nomination for the office.

WHAT ARE THE SECRETS OF FREEMASONRY

The secrets of Freemasonry include confidential ceremonies, symbols, and words used for recognition among members. These elements serve educational and symbolic roles, helping Masons delve into ethical and philosophical subjects.

Rather than hidden knowledge, these secrets are layered teachings that deepen in meaning as members advance through degrees.

They foster a unique bond among Freemasons, maintain the organisation's integrity, and have been passed down through generations to preserve core Masonic values.
