A Legacy of Dedication: Celebrating 50 Years in Freemasonry

17 March 25

Freemasonry is a journey measured not in years, but in service, dedication, and the unbreakable bonds formed between Masons.

By W Bro Jeffrey Mendoza

Reaching the milestone of 50 years is not merely an acknowledgment of time—it is a testament to unwavering commitment to Masonic principles. On separate occasions, two distinguished Brethren, W Bro Ashley Kindred and W Bro Steve Blinkhorn of Lodge Sydney St George 269, were honoured for their half-century of dedication to Freemasonry, an achievement reflecting both personal perseverance and the enduring strength of Masonic brotherhood.

At Campbelltown RSL, W Bro Ashley (Ash) Kindred was presented with his 50-Year Service Jewel and Certificate in the presence of fellow Brethren and loved ones. Though unable to attend Lodge meetings in recent years, W Bro Ash has remained an enthusiastic supporter of Freemasonry, always eager to stay informed and engaged in Lodge affairs.

The Worshipful Master, W Bro Jeffrey Mendoza, had the honour of presenting the Service Jewel and Certificate, a symbol of Ash’s unwavering dedication. RW Bro Brian Potter reaffirmed that the doors of the Lodge would always be open to Ash, a sentiment that embodies the lifelong fraternity within Freemasonry.

W Bro Ashley Kindred’s Masonic journey began on December 14, 1973, when he was initiated into Freemasonry. Advancing through the degrees, he was passed on May 10, 1974, and raised as a Master Mason on July 12, 1974. His commitment to service led him to several leadership roles, including Junior Warden (1978/79), Senior Warden (1979/80, 1982/83), and Worshipful Master (1980/81).

His tenure as Worshipful Master exemplified his leadership, guiding Brethren through Masonic teachings and upholding the traditions that define the Craft.

For W Bro Steve Blinkhorn, Freemasonry has been a lifelong journey, beginning in his formative years at the Royal Masonic School for Boys in Bushey, Hertfordshire. This deep-rooted connection to the Craft laid the foundation for a distinguished Masonic career spanning five decades.

Initiated into Templewood Lodge in February 1975, W Bro Blinkhorn progressed to become Worshipful Master in 1984. His Masonic journey was marked not only by his leadership but also by his steadfast commitment to charity and community service. He served as Almoner until November 1991, when he transitioned into the role of Charity Steward. One of his most significant contributions was securing Registered Charity status for the Masonic Charities Association, a lasting legacy that continues to benefit those in need.

In 2004, W Bro Blinkhorn relocated to Australia but maintained his connection with Templewood Lodge, remaining a subscribing member until 2012, when he was honoured as an honorary member. His Masonic journey continued in Australia, where he took on a pivotal role in The Jubilee Southern Highlands Daylight Lodge No. 162, serving as its Secretary in Moss Vale, New South Wales.

His commitment to Freemasonry was further recognised when he was conferred the Grand Rank of Past Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies (PAGDC) in the jurisdiction of New South Wales & Australian Capital Territory (NSW & ACT).

Even across continents, W Bro Steve has remained in touch with his Masonic Brethren, exemplifying the universal nature of Freemasonry and the unbreakable bonds it fosters.

The recognition of W Bro Ashley Kindred and W Bro Steve Blinkhorn’s 50-year Masonic milestones is more than an acknowledgment of time—it is a celebration of unwavering commitment, integrity, and the profound impact Freemasonry has on individuals and communities. Their journeys reflect the ideals of brotherhood, service, and lifelong learning that define the Craft.

As Masons, their dedication serves as an inspiration for future generations to uphold the values of Freemasonry. Their stories remind us that while a Masonic journey begins with initiation, it never truly ends. It continues through every act of kindness, every lesson shared, and every life touched by the principles of Freemasonry.

For those considering Freemasonry, the journeys of W Bro Ashley Kindred and W Bro Steve Blinkhorn offer a glimpse into the lifelong bonds and personal fulfillment that come with being part of this ancient and honorable fraternity. Their experiences highlight the profound impact Freemasonry has—not only on its members but on the broader community.
