Cold night, warm hearts

Standing together for change

By VW Bro Ardon Muriti

In 2025, Freemasons NSW & ACT demonstrated the true strength of our fraternity through action, the generosity and commitment of brethren, and the work of Masonicare.

We made the single largest charitable donation in our organisation’s history – $150,000 – to the Vinnies CEO Sleepout. More than a figure, it was a powerful statement of compassion, unity, and our shared responsibility to support those experiencing homelessness in our communities. It also set the stage for the Grand Master’s Winter Sleepout 2026.

Building on that momentum, the Grand Master’s Winter Sleepout 2026 was held on Saturday, 13 June across NSW and the ACT, continuing the vision and goal set in 2025 and bringing Lodges, Districts, and Masonic Centres together for a night of awareness and solidarity.

Participants slept out in cold, simple conditions – not to replicate homelessness, but to pause, reflect, and remember those who face these conditions every night without choice.

This symbolic act deepens understanding, strengthens fellowship, and supports organisations helping the homeless.

The night was in ‘full flight’ as the Chairman of the Board of Management, RW Bro Joseph Corrigan PSGW, accompanied by RW Bro Joshua Newman PSGW, flew across the State to deliver the MasoniCare Beanies.

The Most Worshipful Grandmaster, MW Bro B Khristian Albano GM, and Bro Owen Guarin hit the ‘Milk Run’ by road, visiting the suburban lodges and brethren. Thank you to those Masonic Centres in Sydney CBD, Camden, Canberra, Blacktown, Castle Hill, Fairfield, Kelso, Kurri-Kurri, Mawson, Moree, Oatley, Petersham, Queanbeyan, Toronto, Turramurra, Wagga Wagga, and many others that took part through the night until the sun rose in the East.

Further funds were raised through other charitable events, such as Bunnings BBQs, basketball, and billiards competitions, and funds are still being raised towards this worthy cause.

This one night left a lasting impact – on those we support, and on ourselves. This winter, Freemasonry showed itself as a fraternity of values and action.
