District Eleven Unites for a Brighter Future: $3,000 Donated to “A Start in Life"

16 June 25

A spirit of unity and generosity was on full display at a recent BBQ and picnic day hosted by Lodge Eltham 272, where members of Lodge Ballina United 112 and Lodge Eltham came together for an afternoon of fellowship and giving. The event, a well-attended event including several families and children, proved to be more than just a social gathering—it was a celebration of shared values and the power of Freemasonry to create lasting change.

The highlight of the day was the presentation of a $3,000 donation to A Start in Life, a not-for-profit organisation that supports students in need by helping them pursue brighter futures through education. The cheque was presented by VW Bro David Hutchinson, District Grand Inspector of Workings for District Eleven, and RW Bro Peter Pickup, with Kathleen Donohoe, CEO of A Start in Life, graciously accepting the contribution.

The donation was the result of a district-wide fundraising initiative, sparked by an initial generous donation from VW Bro Bob Hassall. Inspired by that gesture, VW Bro David Hutchinson channelled his trademark energy and enthusiasm to organise and drive a wider campaign across District Eleven. The result was a unified effort that not only raised vital funds but also strengthened the bonds between Lodges and the broader community.

A Start in Life, established over 100 years ago, is dedicated to assisting students who lack the everyday resources many take for granted. Through personalised support from their Student Assistance Team, as well as access to learning resources, workshops, coaching, and enrichment experiences, the organisation helps students unlock their potential and broaden their horizons. The $3,000 donation from District Eleven will directly contribute to these vital programs, providing young minds with opportunities to thrive.

In recognition of the pivotal role he played in initiating the fundraiser, VW Bro Bob Hassall was presented with a certificate of appreciation by Bro Phil Davis, a proud member of Lodge Eltham. The gesture highlighted the respect and gratitude felt by those present, as well as the importance of individual leadership within a collective effort.

The event served as a reminder of the enduring values at the heart of Freemasonry: community, compassion, and a commitment to making a positive difference. Families shared food and stories, children played freely, and Brothers from different Lodges reconnected in a relaxed, welcoming environment.

In the end, it was more than just a BBQ—it was a living example of Freemasonry in action. A day filled with warmth, generosity, and purpose, showing how small acts, when united by shared intent, can help change lives.
