Grand Master’s Final Regional Engagement Celebrates the Legacy of Tradition

01 October 24

Lodge Courallie recently hosted the Masonic Debutante Ball, where ten young ladies from across the district made their debuts.

The event, held at the Moree Services Club, is a tradition that has stood the test of time and continues to draw attendees from across New South Wales, including brethren from across the jurisdiction.

The Most Worshipful Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of NSW & ACT, MW Bro Lesley N Hicks, who was present to support this time-honoured ceremony. Speaking with Bill Poulos from Moree Online News, the Grand Master reflected on the enduring significance of debutante balls in rural communities.

“Traditional debutante balls are still very popular, especially in rural areas,” he noted. “There are quite a few country lodges still continuing with the Masonic Debutante Ball, and I think it’s really important. I come from Baradine and partnered my wife at her debutante ball in 1976 in Coonabarabran. In the city, there’s so much for people to do, and it’s probably more difficult to hold these events nowadays. However, in the country, it’s more traditional and very important to local communities. Anything important to a local community, be it city or country, I’ll support.”

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of a Distinguished Service to the Community Award to Freemasons’ volunteer, Gwanita Hill. The award, presented by the Grand Master, is a rare honour, with only one or two handed out each year.

“This was a complete surprise,” Mrs. Hill remarked with a smile. “Receiving this award is a heartfelt reminder that my dedication and efforts have truly made a positive impact. It’s inspired me to continue my journey of service and connection.”

Mrs. Hill’s behind-the-scenes work ensures that events like the Masonic Debutante Ball run with clockwork precision, making her contribution invaluable. The Worshipful Master of Lodge Courallie, Doug Hill, acknowledged the months of planning that went into creating a ceremony that will be remembered for years to come. “The arch of steel, formed by Masons and their swords, and the debutantes and their partners was fantastic to watch,” he shared.

Beyond the ballroom, the Moree lodge has made a tangible impact on the community in recent years, donating thousands of dollars to local organizations, including Gwydir Industries and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. “We also sell firewood during winter, with proceeds going to local charities,” Doug Hill explained. “We help the community in different ways, from assisting the elderly with backyard chores to mowing lawns if homeowners are ill or hospitalized. We sponsor kids with learning difficulties and donate to local schools.”

The event, held just prior to the Grand Installation of RW Bro Khris Albano, Deputy Grand Master and Grand Master Elect, serves as a fitting conclusion to MW Bro Lesley N Hicks’ tenure, celebrating the values of service, tradition, and community support that have defined his term as Grand Master. As the leadership mantle is passed, the legacy of dedication and community engagement continues to be upheld and strengthened under the new Grand Master.

As the torch is passed to new leadership, the legacy of service and community connection exemplified at the Moree Masonic Debutante Ball will continue to inspire Freemasons and the communities they support.
