Past Meets Future in Nowra: A New Home for Lodge Nowra Unity No. 60
01 April 25
Freemasons from across New South Wales and beyond gathered in Nowra to witness a moment of renewal—a historic occasion for one of the South Coast’s oldest lodges.
Lodge Nowra Unity No. 60, the modern successor to the original Lodge Abercorn, officially opened the doors to its new home: the Nowra Masonic Centre at 39a Berry Street. It was a day that honoured the past, embraced the present, and set a clear course for the future of Freemasonry in the region.
A Legacy Dating Back to 1878
Freemasonry in Nowra traces its lineage back nearly 150 years. Lodge Abercorn No. 7 was formally warranted in 1878 by the newly formed Grand Lodge of New South Wales, with MW Bro James Squire Farnell—the first Grand Master—signing the original charter. This act established Nowra as one of the early centres of Masonic practice in the young colony.
Following the 1888 unification of lodges under the English, Scottish, and NSW Constitutions, Lodge Abercorn was renumbered 60. In 2005, it merged with Lodge Shoalhaven to form Lodge Nowra Unity No. 60, continuing its mission to serve the local community and uphold the values of the Craft.
That mission took a bold step forward in 2025.
A New Temple for a New Era
The need for a new facility had become increasingly clear in recent years. The previous premises, while rich in character, could no longer meet the practical demands of a modern lodge. Accessibility, technology, and infrastructure had become essential considerations. The decision was made—not just to build a new space—but to create one that honoured tradition while embracing innovation.
The new Nowra Masonic Centre was designed with this vision in mind. The result is a seamless blend of past and present. The Centre houses carefully preserved artefacts, including the framed original warrants from 1878 and 1888, displayed alongside modern lighting, integrated technology, and accessibility features. The Lodge is now fully equipped to support Freemasonry in the 21st century.
A Day of Dedication and Celebration
The formal Dedication Ceremony was conducted by the Grand Master MW Bro Khris Albano, supported by the Grand Lodge Ceremonial Team. For many in attendance, it was a rare and moving experience—to see the ancient traditions and formalities of Freemasonry enacted with precision in a newly consecrated setting.
Once the building was officially dedicated, the gavel was returned to VW Bro David Baker, Worshipful Master of Lodge Nowra Unity, who then commenced the next part of the evening: the Initiation of Bro Len Hambleton.

Initiations are always deeply meaningful. But this one offered a moment that few present will ever forget.
The initiation was spectacular with many highlights, including our brother being brought into Freemasonry with 3 Past Grand Masters presenting swords at the special moment. The symbolism was powerful, the atmosphere electric. It was not just an Initiation—it was a declaration: that this Lodge, and this moment, mattered.
This singular act—three Past Grand Masters united in ceremony—marked the high point of the evening and demonstrated the strength of support for the Lodge and its future.

With the Initiation complete, the Grand Master delivered the Sixth Section of the ceremony, inviting all Entered Apprentices and Fellow Crafts in the room to participate—an inclusive gesture that reinforced the unity and progression at the heart of Masonic tradition.
Before the Lodge was closed, a surprise awaited the Brethren: a musical trio performed by VW Bro Michael Hill, Bro Tony Dunn, and VW Bro David Baker. Light-hearted and warmly received, it was a fitting and joyful conclusion to a historic meeting.
The evening continued at the Worrigee Sports Club, where 130 members, guests, and partners came together for a celebratory banquet. Speeches were delivered, stories shared, and $2,200 was raised through a spirited raffle—affectionately referred to as a “swindle.” Entertainment was provided by Scott Usback, known as A 3rd of The Byrd, who kept the energy high and the crowd engaged throughout the night.
Looking Ahead
The new Nowra Masonic Centre represents more than just bricks and mortar. It is a statement of intent—a sign that Lodge Nowra Unity is not only preserving its proud past but is committed to building an even stronger future.
With a revitalised space, a growing membership, and deep community roots, the Lodge stands ready to carry the light of Freemasonry forward for generations to come.
