The Power of Sharing: Why Freemasonry's Stories Matter

21 January 25

Freemasonry holds its secrets, but the meaningful work done by our Lodges, Districts, and Regions should not be hidden. Imagine the light of Freemasonry shining not just within our Lodges, but across our communities. Our successes and contributions deserve to be told—to inspire not just fellow Freemasons but everyone who encounters us.

Too often, we hesitate to share these moments. Maybe it’s humility or reluctance to step into the spotlight. But the stories we keep to ourselves could inspire others to walk our path.

Freemasonry in NSW and ACT has a rich history. Our Lodges, whether in bustling cities or quiet towns, have long upheld values like brotherhood, charity, and integrity. These are stories of community service, personal growth, and lasting friendships. If left untold, they risk fading into obscurity.

Silence can be powerful, but it can also be detrimental. When we don’t share the incredible work our Lodges do, we risk our contributions going unnoticed. More importantly, the values and principles of Freemasonry might not reach those who need them most. Potential members might never join because they haven’t heard about Freemasonry’s impact in their community. Existing members might lose their connection, not seeing the relevance of their work.

On the other hand, when we share our stories, they resonate far beyond our immediate circles. A simple account of a Lodge’s community service project, a special meeting, or a debutante ball can inspire others to take action, get involved, or even consider joining Freemasonry. Sharing these successes isn’t about boasting—it’s about showing the world what Freemasonry stands for and the positive impact we have.

Modesty doesn’t mean staying silent. While humility is a virtue, it shouldn’t stop us from sharing the good work we do. The belief that sharing our stories is akin to boasting can lead us to hide our light under a bushel. This kind of false modesty can be harmful—not just to the growth of Freemasonry but to individuals who could benefit from our message.

If we fail to share our stories, we miss opportunities. Without stories, there is no legacy. Without a legacy, there is no future. The silence of our Lodges could lead to the perception that Freemasonry is no longer active or relevant. This couldn’t be further from the truth, but perception is powerful, and in the absence of evidence to the contrary, it becomes reality. Our stories are the evidence that keeps the flame of Freemasonry burning bright.

History shows that those who don’t tell their stories are often forgotten. The lesson is clear: visibility and communication are key to keeping any organization vibrant and relevant. By sharing our stories, we ensure that our values and principles continue to resonate with each new generation. We also provide a roadmap for future Freemasons, showing them how to live by the tenets of our craft in today’s world.

Sharing our stories transforms not only how others see Freemasonry but also how we see ourselves. It reinforces our commitment to our principles and connects us more deeply to our community and each other. By stepping forward and telling our stories, we ensure that Freemasonry’s light continues to shine brightly for all to see.

Let’s not be silent. Let’s share the stories of our Lodges, from Bourke to Ballina, from Balranald to Bombala, and beyond. For in these stories lies the future of Freemasonry.
