United for a Cure: Hunter Freemasons Rally for Childhood Brain Cancer Research

20 June 25

In a moving gesture of unity and compassion, Newcastle Masonic Districts 14, 15, and 16 have joined forces to launch a fundraising initiative in support of one of the most devastating childhood cancers—Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), also known as Diffuse Midline Glioma (DMG). The initiative centres around the sale of commemorative coins, each priced at $40, with proceeds directed toward critical research through the charity RUN DIPG.

At the June Quarterly Communication in Sydney, the campaign reached a significant milestone. A number of coins were purchased, signalling both financial and symbolic support for the cause. In a particularly poignant moment, our 41st Grand Master, along with Grand Masters 40 and 37/39, were each presented with one of the coins—a tribute to their leadership and enduring commitment to charitable causes within and beyond the Craft.

About RUN DIPG

RUN DIPG is a charity founded with a singular purpose: to improve outcomes for DIPG/DMG patients and their families. Its mission includes raising awareness, advocating for advanced treatment protocols, and—crucially—funding research that offers hope for a future where DIPG is no longer a death sentence.

Since its inception, RUN DIPG has made extraordinary strides. The organisation has invested over $5 million in DIPG/DMG research, supported the planning of future research initiatives, and cultivated a global community of advocates, donors, and scientists. With a media presence spanning more than 50 publications and an international social media following exceeding 7,000, RUN DIPG has become a beacon of hope for families, researchers, and supporters alike.

The charity’s website has welcomed over 35,000 unique visitors from 55 countries, serving as a vital hub for education, fundraising, and updates on research progress. To date, nearly $3 million AUD has been raised—largely through grassroots efforts, including initiatives like this one led by the Hunter Freemasons.

Freemasonry in Action

Freemasonry has always stood for the betterment of humanity. Its principles of charity and service are more than ceremonial—they are lived out through meaningful actions. The DIPG coin fundraiser is a powerful expression of this tradition.

By purchasing and distributing these coins, Freemasons are doing more than raising funds—they're raising awareness. Each coin is a conversation starter. A symbol. A reminder that even the smallest token, shared with conviction, can carry profound meaning.

This initiative also demonstrates how Masons can mobilise locally for global impact. DIPG may be rare, but its reach is devastating. Supporting organisations like RUN DIPG means joining an international fight to find the first truly effective treatment for this heartbreaking disease.

How to Support

Each coin costs $40, with all proceeds going directly to DIPG/DMG research via RUN DIPG. Whether you're a Mason or a member of the broader community, your support is welcome and encouraged.
